As spring approaches, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is offering essential safety tips for hikers. With the season's unpredictable weather, the DEC advises hikers to monitor conditions and halt their hikes if the weather worsens. Hikers should carry a backpack with essentials such as food, water, and extra batteries to prepare for emergencies. It is also crucial to never hike alone and to inform someone about your hiking plans.

According to the DEC, fluctuating weather can create hazardous conditions, such as rapidly melting snow and ice, which can lead to rising rivers and streams. Hikers should be aware of potential ice jams and flooding hazards.

The DEC also highlights the importance of using traction devices on trails, particularly in high elevations where snow persists. Snowshoes are recommended for snowy areas, while crampons or other traction devices are advised for icy trails. An ice axe may be necessary above the tree line.

For more information on safe hiking practices, visit the DEC's Winter Hiking Safety webpage. In case of emergencies, hikers can call 911 or the DEC Forest Ranger Emergency Dispatch at 1-833-NYS-RANGERS.
