Shawn Mendes Foundation Partners With Global Citizen For Scholarship Fund

On Tuesday (July 14), Shawn Mendes and his namesake foundation made an exciting announcement. The Shawn Mendes Foundation is partnering with Global Citizen Year to launch a new leadership program called the Global Citizen Academy for high school graduates. In addition to launching the Global Citizen Academy, The Shawn Mendes Foundation and Global Citizen Year are committing to $250,000 in need based scholarships, as well.

"We’re partnering with [Global Citizens] to help launch Global Citizen Academy, a leadership experience for high school graduates from around the world to learn powerful & practical skills to help propel their social impact," the Shawn Mendes Foundation's Instagram announcement reads. "We’ll be providing $250k in need-based scholarships so tuition fees don’t prevent anyone from participating."

The "first of its kind" program is designed with Minerva Project and will feature its own curriculum, as well as inviting a variety of speakers to lecture about important social issues as racial justice, climate change and human rights. Mendes himself will be an active part of the Global Citizen Academy. The 21-year-old will serve as Global Youth Chair for the Academy, which consists of "amplifying recruitment worldwide" and curating speakers for the Academy’s 'Leadership In Action' series, according to Variety.

“Our world needs young leaders now more than ever," Mendes told the outlet about the exciting collaboration with Global Citizens. "It’s been truly inspiring to watch so many young activists use their voices. By working with Global Citizen Academy, my hope is that we can empower many more young people around the world with the resources and tools they need to make an impact.”

“In recent months many have called on Gen Z — and, specifically, this year’s high school graduates — to step up and lead,” Abby Falik, Global Citizen Year founder and CEO, added. “Some have called for a year of service, others have called for a national corps. But until now, no one has provided a clear and tangible way to do it. We’re thrilled to partner with Shawn and his Foundation to launch Global Citizen Academy: a powerful new pathway for young people who are ready to get in the arena, level up and lead.. To anyone around the world who is inspired by Shawn’s activism and leadership, I hope you’ll join us. This is your chance to become the kind of leader our world needs now.”

Interested participants can submit their applications to the Global Citizen Academy through July 30th.
