SHERIFF’S OFFICE INVESTIGATES PERSONAL INJURY ACCIDENT
IN CLAVERACK
Claverack, NY- Columbia County Sheriff David P. Bartlett reports that on September 23, 2019 at approximately 2:33pm, Deputy Sheriffs were dispatched by Columbia County 911 for a two vehicle personal injury accident on State Route 23, just west of Donnelly Road in the Town of Claverack.
Deputies found that a 1988 Mack dump truck, operated by 28 year old Michael Gables of Winsted CT, was driving westbound on State Route 23 and crossed over into the eastbound lane and into the path of a 1973 BMW motorcycle. The motorcycle, operated by 26 year old Andreas Papoyans of Hudson NY, was traveling eastbound on State Route 23 when the dump struck him. The operator of the motorcycle was ejected after the impact. A contributing factor in this accident was the dump truck having an unsafe left front flat tire.
Mr. Papoyans complained of injuries to his chest, legs and arms from the crash. He was airlifted to Albany Medical Center by Lifenet. There were no passengers on the motorcycle.
Mr. Gables was not injured from the accident. He was issued a tickets for failure to keep right, unsafe tires, and uninspected motor vehicle. Sheriff’s Office K9 Sergeant Heath Benansky conducted a commercial motor vehicle inspection and additionally, Mr. Gables was issued several tickets under the New York State Transportation Law and will answer the tickets in Claverack Town Court on October 15, 2019 at 5:30pm.
The Greenport Rescue Squad and the Churchtown Fire Department assisted at the scene.
