HUDSON, N.Y. –A cadre of family and friends of the late John Gallo, Sr. of Hudson, N.Y., has created the John Gallo Memorial Scholarship to benefit students enrolled in the new Construction Technology – Preservation Certificate program at Columbia-Greene Community College.
A long-time resident of Hudson, graduate of Hudson High School and an Army veteran of the Vietnam War, Gallo spent more than 30 years as an ironworker before retiring to Florida. He passed away in May 2016, and soon after The John Gallo Memorial Golf Tournament held in Rotonda, Fla., was founded in his honor with the assistance of the Sons & Daughters of Italy #659 in Hudson. Monies were raised at the tournament earlier this year to fund the scholarship, which will also accept contributions on an on-going basis.
C-GCC’s new Construction Technology program has been formally approved by the New York State Education Department as a hands-on series of courses designed to help students jump-start their carpentry careers. The program will be housed in a brand-new technology building on the C-GCC campus, where students will train to construct and renovate residential buildings using current and emerging building practices. No prior carpentry or construction experience is required to apply to this program, which can be completed in one year.
