North Chatham Free Library (NCFL) Presents Copake-based Japanese Stencil Artist Mayuko Fujino on Sunday, October 26 at 3 P.M.
This Free Event is Located at 4287 Route 203
North Chatham, NY (October 3, 2025) – Combining her love of birds and her art comes naturally to Mayuko Fujino. She describes her artistic journey: “I am a self-taught artist from Japan with over 20 years of practice in hand-cut paper crafts and a commercial illustrator with over 10 years of experience. My interest in birds led me to focus on environmental issues as an artist and to serve as a board member of the Alan Devoe Bird Club in Columbia County. I have been a radio programmer since 2015 and currently host a monthly radio show “Beakuency: Meet Bird People in the Hudson Valley!” on Wave Farm's WGXC, a community radio station based in the Catskills.”
Her program at NCFL will feature her recent works of art, inspired by stories shared in the radio interviews she has conducted with local birders involved in conservation efforts. It will be a chance for audience members to see her work, chat with her, and learn about birds and birders. In this divisive time, this program promises to be a refreshing reminder of things we share and can celebrate in common.
Ms. Fujino has created illustrations such as magazine and book covers, murals, and information kiosk installations for clients including the National Audubon Society, Nature Conservancy, Swarthmore College, Williams-Sonoma, New York City Department of Transportation, and Atlantic Magazine. As a paper cutout and stencil artist, she has exhibited internationally at locations such as Megumi Ogita Gallery (Tokyo, Japan), the Old Jaffa Museum (Tel Aviv, Israel), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark (Copenhagen, Denmark), and Fuller Craft Museum (Brockton, MA). Her work is featured in a book which introduces 25 of the world's top papercraft artists entitled Paper Cut: An Exploration Into the Contemporary World of Papercraft Art and Illustration by noted papercraft illustrator Owen Gildersleeve. She has also worked as a teaching artist with community organizations such as Art Omi (Ghent, NY), and after-school programs in NYC public schools.
No reservations are required.
This project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program, a regrant program of the NY State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the NY State Legislature and administered by CREATE Council on the Arts.
