CANAAN—Canaan firefighters had a busy couple of days last week responding to two motor vehicle accidents in which vehicles went over or through guardrails, April 19 and 23.
Two people were hurt in an accident on Route 22, April 23.
According to the Columbia County 911 call log, Canaan and Red Rock firefighters along with the Chatham Rescue Squad were all dispatched at 8:31 p.m. for the Route 22 accident near the Queechy Lake Drive intersection.
R.E. Lindmark of ColumbiaPage.com said the accident was north of Tremper Association Road.
Red Rock firefighters stood by in their own quarters.
It was reported the vehicle was headed southbound on Route 22 when it struck and went over the guardrail and crashed into a tree, says ColumbiaPage.com.
Chatham Rescue responded with two ambulances. One patient was taken to Berkshire Medical Center and the other to Albany Medical Center.
State Police investigated and were assisted by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.
Firefighters were back in service at 10:10 p.m., according to County Control.
On April 19, Canaan firefighters didn’t have to travel far to respond to an accident in which a vehicle went through the guardrail ended up in a swamp at 2126 Route 295 in front of the fire station at 11:14 a.m.
Columbia County 911 dispatched Canaan and Red Rock firefighters and Columbia County EMS Greenport Rescue that morning for a report of a vehicle in a swamp. The driver was unable to get out.
Firefighters used an ice rescue sled to help remove the driver from the swamp due to the water and mud, according to ColumbiaPage.com.
A med-evac helicopter was placed on standby but was not needed. The driver refused medical attention.
State Police investigated. Firefighters were back in service at 11:39 a.m.
