Adam Lambert Is 'Proud' Of Sam Smith For Coming Out As Non-Binary

Adam Lambert is showing his support for Sam Smith, who came out as non-binary earlier this year and last month announced their preferred pronouns are they/them.

During an interview with NME, the Queen frontman addressed Smith's coming out and how he understands the added attention (he publicly came out in 2009, after winning American Idol). "The media loves something that feels new and ten years ago — in America anyway — there wasn’t a lot of mainstream music people identifying as gay, so it was a novelty, and I feel there might be some parallels there," he explained. "On a personal level, I’m really happy for Sam that they’ve found their truth and they’re feeling liberated by it.”

"At some point, you have to break through the ceiling and discuss trans or non-binary issues and I’m so proud of Sam," Lambert continued. "They’re really doing a bold thing."

While accepting the Person of the Year award at the Attitude Awards earlier this week, the pop star opened up about their "second coming out."

"The last year has been a wild ride of self-realization and has almost felt like a second coming out," they said during their speech. "The reason I've been able to show all of the sides of myself to the public and express myself in these ways is because I felt incredibly safe."
