Trial date set for two charged in violent home invasion

Two of the four people charged in a violent home invasion in Canaan April 19th, were in Columbia County Court Thursday. 22 year old Tomas Simpson of Chatham and 21 year old Zilla Kelly of New Lebanon both waived indictment. A trial date for both is scheduled for December 2nd.

No word on the status of the other two charged.

Canaan, New York – On April 19, 2019, the New York State Police from the New Lebanon barracks and Livingston Bureau of Criminal Investigation arrested Zilla M. Kelly, age 21, of New Lebanon, NY, Elizabeth M. Jennings, age 19, of Stuyvesant, NY, Tomas N. Simpson, age 22, of Chatham, NY, and Jaquan A. Hamilton, age 24, of East Greenbush, NY, for Burglary in the 1st degree, a class B felony.

On April 19, 2019, Troopers responded to Peaceful Valley Road in the town of Canaan for a report of three subjects attempting to gain access to a residence. Investigation found the incident had occurred on April 17, 2019, and out of fear of reprisal the victim did not call the State Police immediately. Further investigation found Kelly, Simpson, and Hamilton entered the residence, and assaulted the victim who was known to them. The three male suspects then left the residence with a fourth involved suspect, Elizabeth Jennings.

The victim was treated for non life threatening injuries.

All defendants were arraigned before the town of Livingston Court, and remanded by Honorable Judge Guzzi to the Columbia County Jail without bail.  All defendants are next scheduled to appear before town of Canaan Court on April 25, 2019, at 6:00 p.m.
