Fire at her home claims life of Hudson resident

HUDSON—A 46-year-old woman perished in a fire in her apartment at 33 Columbia Street, the evening of Sunday, February 14.

Hudson Police Chief L. Edward Moore told The Columbia Paper this week that Raba Akter was the victim of the fire on the first floor of her two-story apartment.

Columbia County 911 dispatched firefighters from Hudson, Greenport, Stuyvesant, Claverack, Germantown and Catskill, along with the Greenport Rescue Squad to the scene of the structure fire at 7:48 p.m.

The rescue squad performed CPR at the fire scene and took the woman to Columbia Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The chief said Ms. Akter was the only person in the apartment at the time of the fire, though she does not live there alone.

Both Ms. Akter’s cause of death and the cause of the blaze remain under investigation, Chief Moore said Tuesday.

There were no signs of foul play, he said, and Ms. Akter will undergo “a medical examination” to determine how she died.

Preliminary results are expected in the next couple of days, he said.

Police along with the State Office of Fire Prevention and Control, and the Columbia County Cause and Origin Team were on the scene investigating through the evening of Monday, February 15. Police are coordinating the investigation with fire investigators, the County Coroners Office, and the District Attorney’s Office.

The Hudson Department of Public Works, National Grid and Hudson Code Enforcement assisted on the scene,

Firefighters were back in service at 9:15 p.m.
