Police charge BB gun brandished in road rage incident

GREENPORT—State Police from the Livingston barracks arrested Paul A. Artis, 31, of Tivoli for second degree menacing, a class A misdemeanor, June 16.

At 8:30 p.m. that date, troopers responded to State Route 9G for a report of a road rage incident involving a handgun near the roundabout intersection east of the Rip Van Winkle Bridge. Mr. Artis engaged in a road rage incident by allegedly menacing the occupants of another vehicle with a BB gun.

Mr. Artis was arraigned virtually in Livingston Court and released on his own recognizance. He is next scheduled to appear in Greenport Court, September 21 at 3:30 p.m.

*William C. Herschler, III, 30, of Meriden, CT, was charged with second degree assault, a class C felony, June 9 at 4:20 p.m.

Mr. Herschler was an inmate in the Columbia County Jail June 3, when he allegedly assaulted a corrections officer. He was arraigned before Justice Barry Sack in Greenport Court and was sent back to the Columbia County Jail in lieu of $15,000 cash bail or $50,000 bond. He was to reappear in Columbia County Court at a later date.

On June 16, Mr. Herschler was charged with being a fugitive from justice by Deputy Steven Rose. Mr. Herschler is wanted in Connecticut for a parole violation. He was arraigned virtually before Columbia County Judge Richard Koweek and was sent back to the Columbia County Jail to be held, pending extradition to Connecticut.
