SHERIFF’S OFFICE ARRESTS FLORIDA MAN FOR

SEXUAL OFFENSE

Copake, NY- Sheriff David P. Bartlett reports that the Sheriff’s Office arrested a Florida resident on January 27, 2020 at approximately 1:45 pm and charged him with Sexual Abuse in the First Degree.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit began the investigation on January 8, 2020 after receiving a report of alleged child abuse from Manitowoc, Wisconsin Child Protective Services. Senior Investigator Mark Dunspaugh, with the cooperation and assistance from Manitowoc Police Department Detectives, determined that the alleged sexual abuse occurred in the town of Copake during the summer of 2019 at a time when the victim was less than 11 years old.

Senior Investigator Dunspaugh and Deputy Sheriff Andrew Horst arrested 22 year old Xavier Canning. He was charged with one count of Sexual Abuse in the first degree, which is a Class D Felony.

Mr. Canning is a resident of North Port Florida who sometimes resides with family in the town of Copake.

Mr. Canning was arraigned before Town of Greenport Judge Barry Sack and was remanded to the Columbia County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail/$50,000 bond.He is scheduled to appear back in court on January 31, 2020 at 9:00 am.

This arrest was made in cooperation with the Columbia County District Attorney’s Office, the Manitowoc Police Department (Wisconsin), the Manitowoc Human Services Department (Wisconsin), the Willow Tree Child Advocacy Center (Wisconsin), and the Dr. Stephen and Suzanne Child Advocacy Center (Hudson, NY).
