PRESS RELEASE: RED HOOK OFFICER SAVES COLUMBIA COUNTY MAN OVERDOSING
On June 1, 2019 Officer Simmons responded to a call on Rt. 9 / Fraleigh Lane in the Town of Red Hook for an unconscious male slumped over the steering wheel not breathing.
Officer Simmons sat the male subject up and saw that he was turning purple not breathing. With the assistance of the Milan Fire Department Chief (Kurt Mitzger) they took the male out of the vehicle and placed him on the ground where he still was not breathing.
Officer Simmons quickly administered the first dose of Narcan which had negative results. He quickly then ran back to his patrol car to retrieve more Narcan. He administered a second dose of Narcan which yielded positive results. After the second dose the male subject became responsive and started to resume normal breathing. The male subject survived and was transported to Northern Dutchess Hospital. Narcan is an opiate reversal nasal spray used to counteract on opiate overdoses.
Officer Simmons is also a Fireman with the Tivoli Fire Department where he is trained to administer Narcan as well. Many Officers / EMS personal and Fireman across this county save people’s lives on a regular basis. It can be a very stressful situation where seconds count and it is important they get recognized for their efforts. Officer Simmons will be presented with a Life Saving Award by the Village of Red Hook.
