Bridge to be replaced in Taghkanic

State Department of Transportation Begins Construction on Taconic State Parkway Bridge over County Route 27, Columbia County

Project will Enhance Safety and Mobility Along Vital Roadway

The New York State Department of Transportation today announced that construction has begun on a $6.8 million project to replace the Taconic State Parkway bridge over County Route 27 in the town of Taghkanic, Columbia County. The project will enhance safety and improve driving conditions along this important roadway, which carries travelers through the scenic eastern Hudson River Valley and provides access to numerous state parks and other tourist destinations.

As part of the project, the existing three-span bridge carrying the parkway over County Route 27 will be replaced with a modern, single-span structure that will reduce maintenance costs and ease travel for decades to come. To go along with the parkway’s historic status, the new bridge will have aesthetic features that mimic the appearance of the existing bridge, including a plaque about the original and new bridges, steel component appearance, stone-faced parapet walls, and concrete structural elements with recessed decorative features.

The design of the new bridge does not include deck joints, eliminating the need for future joint repairs. An improved drainage system will be installed as part of the project.

The Taconic State Parkway will be reduced to one lane in each direction with median cross-overs during construction. All work is expected to be complete by fall 2020.

Motorists are reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in work zones. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver’s license.
