Chatham man gets 15 years for rape

On July 11, 2019, Honorable Jonathan D. Nichols sentenced Morgan Sheldon, age 44, of Chatham, to fifteen (15) years with the New York State Department of Corrections upon his conviction by plea of Rape in the First Degree. Sheldon committed this crime in the town of Stuyvesant. Columbia County Sheriff David P. Bartlett’s Office (Senior Investigator Mark Dunspaugh, Investigator Reagan Anderson, Deputy Michael Meier) investigated this matter and arrested Sheldon. The Public Defender represents Morgan Sheldon.

SHERIFF’S OFFICE ARRESTS LOCAL MAN ON MULTIPLE CHARGES

INCLUDING RAPE

Stuyvesant, NY- Sheriff David P. Bartlett reports that 43 year old Morgan W. Sheldon of 37 Woods Lane Stuyvesant, NY has been arrested on a warrant and charged with multiple crimes, including Rape in the Third Degree.

On December 3, 2017, Sheriff’s Deputies received a report that a female was a victim of an assault. An investigation was initiated by Deputy Michael Meier and Senior Investigator Mark Dunspaugh which revealed that the victim was physically and sexually assaulted by a male suspect who is known to her.

A search warrant, issued by Columbia County Court Judge Richard Koweek, was executed at a residence in the Town of Stuyvesant. Sheriff’s Office Investigators secured evidence that was recovered at the location.

After this incident, the defendant fled the area. Deputies learned that he was possibly at a location in Albany and with the assistance of the City of Albany Police Department; Mr. Sheldon was apprehended today and turned over to Columbia County Sheriff’s Deputies.

On December 11, 2017 at approximately 12:46pm, Morgan W. Sheldon was arrested and charged with Rape in the Third Degree, Criminal Contempt in the First Degree, and Unlawful Imprisonment in the First Degree, all Class E Felonies. Additionally, he was charged with Assault in the Third Degree, Criminal Obstruction of Breathing, Menacing in the Second Degree, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree, all Class A Misdemeanors.

Mr. Morgan was arraigned in Stuyvesant Town Court before Judge Carrie O’Hare and was remanded to the Columbia County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear back in court on December 13, 2017 at 4:00pm.
