Ichabod Crane superintendent to take unpaid leave of absence

Following the arrest of Superintendent Michael Vanyo over the weekend, on charges of DWI and leaving the scene of an accident in Saratoga County, the ICCS school board met tonight and released this statement on the school's website:

A Special Meeting of the Ichabod Crane Central School District Board of Education was held on Tuesday, April 9, 2019, to address the recent allegations involving District Superintendent Michael Vanyo.

Superintendent Vanyo formally requested a voluntary leave of absence from his position.

Considering the serious nature of these allegations, the Board of Education believes that it is in the best interest of the District to grant this request. Pursuant to a resolution approved by the Board of Education at this meeting, the Superintendent will be placed on a voluntary unpaid leave of absence, effective immediately and until further notice. Furthermore, Mr. Vanyo will be required to apply the balance of any accrued leave time to the period of such leave of absence.

In Mr. Vanyo’s absence, pursuant to established Board Policy, Assistant Superintendent Suzanne Guntlow will serve as the Acting Superintendent for so long as the Superintendent shall remain on leave. Ms. Guntlow will assume all the duties and responsibilities of the Superintendent. The Board of Education has complete confidence in Ms. Guntlow’s ability to ensure the smooth and uninterrupted operation of the District. In addition, District Superintendent for Questar III BOCES, Dr. Gladys Cruz, has also offered the Administration of Ichabod Crane her full support, as needed.

The Board will continue to monitor the situation and is prepared to meet as soon as necessary for any additional action.
